Deconstructed Lampshade DIY

Does anyone else like this deconstructed look?

Even though I think it might be hard to live with on a daily basis, it really appeals to me.  Of course, that's probably because I'm always drawn to time worn things.

At any rate, I decided to try to recreate this look on a lampshade that was in dire need of a makeover. Of course, if you don't like the deconstructed look you may think it's still in dire need of a makeover. ":o)

Let me show you what I did

I cut scraps of linen into three inch squares

I glued the top of the squares onto my shade, leaving the bottom part loose.
(I used a white fabric glue)

Kinda like laying bricks... Staggering the layers

I raveled the edges, then sewed old buttons randomly onto the shade

Finally I wrapped & glued  thread around the top to finish it off... (I noticed there was a loose thread up top in this picture...don't worry, I fixed it).

Deconstructed Lampshade!
I like the way it looks with my little decoy lamp.

Speaking of Lamps!
I'm helping my daughter re-do her apartment, and this was her exciting find when we were shopping at LulaB's Antique Mall last week.  It was a bargain at just $35.00.

I brought it home so her Dad could re-wire it for her.

Her taste is very Kitsch and Mid Century Modern.  I'm having a little bit of trouble wrapping my head around it, but I'm getting there.  She has more talent in her little finger than I'll ever have, so it's fun watching her and her new husband putting their home together.

I'm just honored that she asked me to help!

Deconstructed or Retro
Which is your favorite?

  1. I do like it..I do, but it reminds me of 2nd Hand Lions and that movie was kind of sad...I just like to look at it, don't want to sit in that chair, but I DO love your pretty little lamp for sure!

  2. Love what you did to the lamp and adore that chair, although I don't know if I could have it in my lounge room. Maybe on the patio?

  4. I love your lamp shade!
I did something similar to some hobnail lamps I inherited a couple of years ago...I used lace and pieced it all over at random...and I glued buttons and a bunch of trinkets and costume jewelry from a box I also inherited at the same time. The lamps and the trinkets were all from my MIL house. They were her things.

I'm definitely more of a time worn /deconstructed type...though not so much deconstructed as time worn...ha ha ha...
I like the mid century modern. But just don't think I could pull it off.
Although The Honey... i think would like it.
Way more than you wanted in an answer, huh?

  5. OMH I'm lovin it. It's totally cute and cozy looking, and really like how you added the buttons. I'm liking the chair a lot, but I have such a small home, and my chairs need to be for sitting, not looking! My space is small and it really needs to function, but if I had more space I would go for it!

  6. Very nice. It's funny, my daughter totally didn't have my taste until the last couple of years. Now I notice my taste creeping into her home and her old things gradually disappearing. Maybe your daughter will be the same in time. Meanwhile yes enjoy the fact she wants you to help. They are certainly precious. xxoo PS, I don't like retro. But having said that, I did when I married in that era.xxoo

  7. Love your lampshade...and while I like looking at the chair I would not want to live with it full-time. I do love time-worn but not the deconstructed part of it so much.
there was a kind of sad movie with a chair like that but can't remember what it was. . Love the lamp your daughter picked up- I have one dd that is very retro, too. Fun! xo Diana

  8. I still am so loving your lampshade, total creativity on your part. Your daughter letting you help create her room shows how much she truly love you! What's the saying a acorn doesn't fall far from a tree - I think that holds true with creativity also. So glad you shared your creative inspiration with Sunday's Best - you helped create a successful party!

  12. Your fabric lampshade is adorable! My oldest daughter also likes mid century modern. I don't have any in our house, but I do like the lamp your daughter found. I like the quality of light from those old lampshades.
