Autograph Quilt

A few years ago I purchased an old autograph quilt with the intention of repurposing pieces of it.  Only thing, I could never bring myself to cut it up.

All the hand embroidered autographs were so sweet... I loved looking at all the names and imagining how these families were connected.

Now that Buzz and I have retired and are downsizing I decided the best way for me to repurpose this quilt was to take pictures of each square, then donate the actual quilt to a local charity.  I didn't have to destroy it, plus I can use the digital images in dozens of ways.

At first, I was only going to share a couple of the images with you, but I finally decided to share all 19 squares so you could see the names, and maybe connect to some of these people as well.

Enjoy!

Did you know any of these folks?

Feel free to download any of these images for your own art projects...I think these folks might like the idea that their handiwork was still being enjoyed today!

  1. Geneva, maybe you should post this on FB and ask people to send it around, you never know, someone might recognize one of the signers and it is their heirloom! Just a thought xo

  2. What a lovely quilt! I love the soft faded fabrics and would love to know the story behind it. Thanks for sharing all the images- it must have taken you forever to upload all of them!

  3. I don't know any of the names, but I recognize the towns in Missouri (the boot heel) and Arkansas -- they are covered in our weather reports here in Memphis. What a wonderful quilt -- and a nice idea for preserving it, but not having to store it.

  4. Oh thanks for sharing..this is gorgeous. A great idea to photo each part. It has to be very old.
I have 2 quilts I purchased at a resale shop here and there, with the same intentions..they are still whole, tattered and loved. One was signed and stitched: Created for You by your Aunt ANNA ..I felt so bad someone had donated it to a resale shop...always wondered if any other family members would have cherished it.

  6. Great idea to photograph each name and then donate the quilt to a museum. The museum here has an autographed quilt with some of my relatives names on it.

  7. It's a beautiful quilt! I love old handwork. Great idea to take pics of it. Way easier to store in your computer's memory. Mimi

  8. Oh it's so beautiful. What a treasure. I think a museum rather than a charity would be the best way of preserving it. x

  9. I went to an estate sale this summer and the family was practically giving away all the family photos, etc. It made me wonder why they would give up such precious memories. I know I did not know the whole story. I however brought some of the photos home with me and they are displayed with honor in my home. So glad for my family :) Thanks again Geneva for a great blog! 10. Love reading the "old" sounding names. Don't know anyone though. Great idea to shoot it then pass it on!
